Deli Clerk – Union
About the Role
We are looking for a reliable and customer-focused Deli Clerk to join our team. This is a union position covered by the UFCW Local 5 Collective Bargaining Agreement, responsible for preparing, handling, and selling fresh food items while delivering excellent customer service in a fast-paced retail environment.
Deli Clerks are part of the bargaining unit and perform work connected with the handling and selling of food and prepared products offered to customers.
Key Responsibilities
Food Preparation & Handling
- Prepare deli and kitchen items including salads, sandwiches, hot foods, and grab-and-go products
- Slice, package, label, and stock deli products according to company standards
- Maintain proper food rotation (FIFO), freshness, and quality standards
- Operate deli equipment such as slicers, ovens, fryers, and scales safely
- Provide friendly, prompt, and knowledgeable service to customers
- Take orders and assist customers with product selection
- Maintain a clean and appealing service counter and display cases
- Follow all food safety and sanitation guidelines (local health department and company standards)
- Clean and sanitize work areas, equipment, and utensils
- Maintain compliance with all safety procedures and store policies
- Receive, stock, and rotate merchandise in the deli/kitchen department
- Ensure proper pricing, labeling, and product presentation
- Assist with inventory control and shrink reduction
- Work collaboratively with store and department team members
- Assist other departments as needed, consistent with classification and contract provisions
- Perform additional duties as assigned within the scope of the bargaining unit
- Previous deli, kitchen, or food service experience preferred but not required
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment
- Strong customer service and communication skills
- Basic knowledge of food safety and sanitation practices preferred
- This position is covered by the UFCW Local 5 Collective Bargaining Agreement
- Wages, benefits, scheduling, and working conditions are governed by the contract
- New hires are subject to a probationary period (60 days)
- Union membership is required as a condition of employment in accordance with the agreement
- Ability to stand for extended periods
- Ability to lift up to 40–50 lbs.
- Ability to work in refrigerated and hot kitchen environments
- Flexible schedule required, including evenings, weekends, and holidays
- Schedules and hours are assigned in accordance with seniority and operational needs under the union agreement
